The purpose of the Robotic & Automation Systems Lead is to design and implement control systems and robotic integration solutions, with a strong focus on developing scalable, standardized PLC and robotic code. This role requires expertise in programming and deploying systems that communicate across industrial networks with robotics, motor VFDs, Operator HMIs, and field devices. The engineer will lead efforts to define and document best practices, coding standards, and integration protocols to ensure consistency and reliability across all automation projects within the company. The primary software platform used is Rockwell Automation, with a focus on interoperability and modular design.
Responsibilities
- Design and program PLC and robotic systems (Rockwell Automation) with focus on modular, reusable, and adaptable code.
- Integrate VFDs, HMIs, robots, and field devices over industrial networks (Ethernet/IP).
- Create and maintain department-wide automation standards and documentation.
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams to ensure cohesive and compliant system designs.
- Lead and support internal R&D initiatives aimed at improving automation, efficiency, and innovation.
- Support manufacturing operations by driving lean initiatives and continuous improvement efforts to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize production processes.
- Troubleshoot and optimize existing systems for performance and reliability.
- Conduct code reviews and mentor engineers on standards and best practices.
- Evaluate and recommend new robotic technologies to support scalability and efficiency.
- Train junior engineers on tools, processes, and integration methods.
- Assist the automation manager with scheduling, budgeting, and project planning.
- Support all aspects of automation development including design, build, wiring, programming, testing, and installation.
- Travel to customer sites for system installation, commissioning, training, and support.
- Design electrical schematics and components using AutoCAD.
- Communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and team members via phone, email, and in-person.
- Monitor team progress, promote ownership, and encourage innovation.
- Participate in engineering design meetings and maintain department documentation.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- 3–5 years of experience in PLC and robotics programming.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Rockwell Automation tools (Logix Designer, RS Logix 5000, FactoryTalk View ME/SE).
- Proficiency in Fanuc, Stäubli, and/or Allen Bradley Unified Robotics.
- Networking experience with Ethernet/IP.
- Experience with Kinetix 5000 servo systems.
- Ability to manage full project lifecycle independently.
- Electrical design and troubleshooting experience.
- Familiarity with process systems and CIP is a plus.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Willingness to travel 10-20%.
